Signposting a Patient

Written by Nico Campodonico

You can signpost a patient by email or WhatsApp, confirming their consent and contact details before sending.

Before you start

Load and verify the correct patient and obtain consent before sending. Email needs a correct email address; WhatsApp needs a valid UK mobile number and the required digital contact consent. Availability depends on setup.

Step by step

  1. With your patient loaded, find the service you want to signpost to.

  2. Open the service detail page and select the Signpost option.

  3. Choose Email or WhatsApp as the delivery method.

  4. For Email, confirm the patient's email address is correct. For WhatsApp, confirm a valid UK mobile number and the required digital contact consent.

  5. You can add a SNOMED code to the record when sending a signpost.

  6. Send the signpost and confirm it appears in the Activity tab.

Signpost or refer?

If the patient wants Joy to contact the service on their behalf, use a referral. If they want the information to act on themselves, use a signpost. Fileback depends on the clinical connection and organisation setup; check the status.

Check the result

Confirm the signpost appears in Activity. Connected-mode signposts can write back to the patient record where enabled; check the status rather than assuming standalone/Lite supports this.
