Installing JoyConnect for Practice Managers and Digital Leads EMIS - New Users

Please follow this guide if you are a practice manager or digital lead and wish to install JoyConnect.

📌 Note: Please have your EMIS username and password ready. You will need admin rights to install this software.

Completing this install will add the JoyConnect software onto the machine. This will need to be installed on every machine that would like to use JoyConnect to make referrals.


Part One: Creating Joy as a user in EMIS

The first step of this installation guide is to create a new Joy user within EMIS. Once that has been created, you’ll just need to give this new account access to the Joy Partner API.

  1. Select the EMIS Ball in the top corner

  2. Click on “Configuration” 👇

  3. Click “Organisation Configuration” 👇

6. Select “Add New User” 👇

7. Add the following details: ✍️

  • First name: Joy

  • Last name: App

  • Username: Pungo - please note if says username already taken please try using 'Pungo1'

  • Password: enter any password

8. Untick the box that says “user must change password”

9. Click “Next” 👇

10. This should open up to the ‘Role’ tab

11. Add the following details: ✍️

  • Roles: General Medical Practitioner

  • Tick “yes” for “Consulter”

  • User Mnemonic – JC. Please note this does not matter, if it is taken, choose anything else (or change it to JOY instead of JC)

  • Prescriptions: none

  • Relationship: Associated

  • Contract start date: Today’s date

12. Click “Next” 👇

13. Please select User Role profiles and Confirm Joy is assigned to “Clinical Practitioner Access Role” 👇

14. Click the search icon 🔍, then use the search box top left to add the following RBAC codes ✍️. You will only need to search the codes:

  1. B0380 - Perform Detailed Health Record

  2. B8029 - Managed Detailed Records

  3. B0820 - View Patient Demographics

  4. B0370 - View Summary Health Record

  5. ESC01 - View System Configuration

  6. B0062 - Local System Administration

  7. B1700 - Local System Configuration

  8. B0835 - Manage Patient Demographics

  9. B0360 - View Detailed Health Records

  10. B0560

15. Once you can see the correct code in the window below, double click to add it to the selected list 👇👇 in the bottom pane

16. When you have selected all the codes, please click “OK” 👇 and then save the user

17. Congratulations! You have completed the first step of this implementation! 🎉

Now, it’s time to give this account (and all social prescribers) access to Joy.


Part Two: Giving EMIS users access to Joy

  1. Click the EMIS ball 👇

  2. Choose “System Tools” 👇

  3. Choose “EMAS Manager” 👇

4. Choose "Partner API" 👇 from the bottom left

5. Find and then select "Joy" 👇 from the list

6. Press “Activate application” 👇 and double-check it is activated, Joy will have a green tick beside the name once it’s been activated

7. Make sure "Joy" is selected

8. Click “Edit Users” 👇

9. Click on "User" 👇 to alphabetise the list

10. Find the names below and tick the box next ☑️ to them and enter the password ✍️ Monday123:

If the box is already ticked there is nothing you need to action for that person.

  • “App, Joy”

  • “Partner, API” with username APIUSER

  • And any other staff who may be connecting/signposting patients to local services e.g.

    • GPs and clinicians who may signpost a patient to support during a consultation

    • Admins Staff handling appointment requests

    • ARRS roles such as Social prescribers/health coaches/care coordinators

Please don’t untick any users who are already ticked.

11. Click 'OK' 👇

12. Click “Log in Access” 👇

13. Click on "User" 👇 to alphabetise the list

14. Find the names:

  • “App, Joy”

  • “Partner, API” with username APIUSER

  • And any other staff who may be connecting/signposting patients to local services e.g.

15. Tick both boxes for “auto” ☑️ and “allow login” ☑️

16. Click “OK” 👇

17. Please log out and log back into EMIS for all changes to take effect

18. You have now completed the second step! 🎉

IMPORTANT: Once complete please send this email to our support team.


Part Three: Install JoyConnect

Open up the client record of a 'dummy' patient 👇 with an NHS number or 'real' patient on EMIS

  1. Joy is bundled with an auto-updater and we would recommend downloading and installing an older version to validate that the automated patch process is working - download the linked version (a.)

    1. Latest Version (installation will update to this)

  2. Please click on the installed file 👇

  3. Click 'Yes' 👇 on the pop-up window stating 'Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?'

5. Click 'download' 👇 on the file

6. Using the arrow in the top right-hand corner of your screen, click on the downloaded file 👇 to open it

7. You will need to click 'Install' 👇 when this window appears

If you cannot see this window please look at the bottom of your screen for this icon:

If you click this icon it will open the window.

You will see the below screen when JoyConnect is installing:

8. Once installation is successful click 'Close' 👇 on this window

Please Install .net (if required)

  • If you don't have .net installed it will prompt you to install .net

  • If you do have .net installed skip this step

  • Once this is finished installing you will have to restart JoyConnect


Activate JoyConnect


1. Enter your EMIS username and password on the activation window ✍️

This will appear automatically - if not, look for JoyConnect in your taskbar or ask your practice manager.

2. The JoyConnect widget will appear on your screen

Note: You may need to wait a minute for the icon to appear. If you still cannot see the icon after a few minutes, check or expand your taskbar - the JoyConnect application may be minimised there.

3. Click the '+' symbol 👇 to open JoyConnect

4. You can now use JoyConnect! 🎉

That's it! You can now start making referrals through JoyConnect.
